This project was to design an off-grid, "zero-carbon", zero-budget, sustainable First Nations village on a Clan's traditional village site in Northern BC. Working with the clan elder's needs and desires to blend traditional life with modern aspects, we conceptually master planned their rural lake-side site to include private accommodation and agricultural zones as well as publicly accessible education facilities, fishing and ceremonial spaces. The homes incorporated traditional longhouse design for multi-family living with enclosed bedroom space and attached bathrooms, as well as single dwellings. All buildings are designed from on-site pine timber and married with reclaimed glass windows and doors for natural light and thermal comfort. The entire site is designed to use wind power, solar power and use composting toilets provided through government schemes and / or NGO's.
