Tree illustrations for Better Place Forests

Better Place is America’s first conservation spreading forests, introducing a natural alternative to cemeteries. I was commissioned to create botanical illustrations to help their customers during the process of selecting a tree.

The brief was to create a representation of the entire tree and it's needles / leaves, a cone / acorn, so it will be easy for someone with general knowledge to identify it, by showing the uniqueness and differentiating qualities of each tree.
Coastal redwood (Sequoia sempervirens)
Douglas fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii)
Sugar pine (Pinus lambertiana)
Tanoak (Notholithocarpus densiflorus)
Pacific madrone (Arbutus menziesii)
Illustration process

Tree illustrations were created using watercolor on paper. Traditional media gives the artwork a unique look and sense of craftsmanship, that adds an emotional value to the final product.

Every illustration starts from a detailed sketch and transferred to watercolor paper after client’s approval. Color palette for the final piece is also chosen at this stage. By planning and outlining all details we can make sure that nothing important is left behind.

I work with artist grade watercolors and high quality watercolor paper. Artist grade paints will always look vibrant and were created to stand the test of time. My custom watercolor palette include many colors you can find in nature, and frequently updates with new colors from world’s best producers of watercolor paints.
