VSP® Orthopaedics

VSP® Orthopaedics is an FDA 510(k) cleared Class II surgical device. It represents the next generation of orthopaedic surgical solutions, and is the first device of its kind with FDA clearance for oncology applications. Virtual Surgical Planning combined with patient specific 3D-printed surgical guides and anatomical models create a surgical approach that is truly state-of-the-art.

As the design lead of this product, I oversaw its development from concept to commercialization. The design was developed through collaboration with orthopaedic surgeons and industry leaders. Bearing the responsibility for design of all product deliverables, I encountered multidisciplinary design challenges (product, human factors, graphic, UI/UX, etc.). This included creating all aspects of the surgical guides and models, surgical technique documents, product packaging, product labeling, case reports and beyond. I also often performed tasks related to product and quality engineering. Clinical research was performed at Montefiore Medical Center in New York, NY and University of Colorado Anshutz Medical Campus in Aurora, CO. In addition to my role as design lead, I contributed to a variety of verification and validation studies as an author, reviewer, and conductor.

Due to the nature of the project, design and development were conducted primarily in 3D. Ideas were digitally sculpted in Geomagic Freeform before being 3D printed using Selective Laser Sintering (SLS). This allowed for a rapid and hands-on iterative process. The below images are examples of functional and dimensional development parts.
