IDENTITY/UNTITLED
WM Gallery Amsterdam November 2010
I believe that the fact of the juxtaposition of the white and black races has created a massive psychoexistential complex. I hope by analyzing it to destroy it The architecture of this work is rooted in the temporal - Frantz Fanon (Peau noire, masques blancs / 1952)

IDENTITY / UNTITLED - explores, via the first collaborative series of projects by artists MJ Turpin and Catarina Aimée Dahms - how generalizations and ignorance are enmeshed.

Re-articulating the concept and notion of The "Motherland" (diasporatic migration and return) via socio-politics, identity and geography.

Dealing with notions and the basic premise/theory of: what (you want) people (to) see, and what you are? and hence the interrogation of the constructs of identity via the deconstruction of immigration,
the politics of identity and movement, perception and perceived identity,to a degree a contemporary inversion of Frantz Fanons Peau noire, masques blancs (Black Skin, White Masks)if you will.

Exploring the contemporary currency of face value and assuming the principle that nationality and race are socio-cultural constructs and hence plays with the idea that ironically,
racism may not be colour-specific.

Seeking to question and subvert established definitions and positions with regards to identity, geographic placement and the narratives thereof within an urban environment.
