27th Annual San Diego Latino Film Festival Poster

As the 27th year of San Diego's Latino Film Festival approaches us, the following poster is my entry into their annual poster contest. We were given the task to tackle down the stereotypical ways "latino" is interpreted. To think outside the box, and come up with a unique way to represent the latino community. Being a Latina myself and growing up in Sunny San Diego, I definitely entered this project a little overly confident. It was challenging to be able to come up with something given the rules and restrictions we were given. However after many hours of creative processing and many cups of coffee later I came up with the poster below.
The Process...
Coming into this project I knew I wanted to focus on 3 things; Symbolizing San Diego, representing the Latino Community, and Bold Vibrant colors. All while adding the "Film" concept to it. I began playing with film strips and film reels until I decided I wanted the reel to almost symbolize the world. After adding it to the bottom i wanted to include the 3 most popular San Diego destinations, peaking out of it (Balboa Park,The Del and Downtown San Diego). As I was playing with the film reel, it made me think of a sugar skull. And although sugar skulls go against the rules I did want to include the pattern on it.
Then came the hard part... Picking color. When I think of the the Latino community I think of bright, lively colors just like the people. I originally wanted to stick to the idea of sunny San Diego and wanted to go with a light blue, teal background but then had the problem of colors not popping out .A quick switch to a dark royal blue tied everything together and made everything feel more alive, like a party. I thought of different ways to layout the text, and ended up settling on a curved alignment following the reels shape.
Heres a quick example of the poster in action!
