GRAY SCALE SELF PORTRAIT
September 2019: I have been given a project to create a self portrait in ink, capturing gray scale in the drawing.
I will be using:
-Ink
-Ink
-Pencil
-Bond paper
-Illustration board
First stage is to brainstorm my ideas.
I did a sample of some gray scales in order to determine an interesting but also viable shading technique.
This is the original photo that I chose to work on, as it has a lot of value from dark to light areas.
PROCESS WORK
I then traced the photo in order to create a template I could use to experiment with techniques.
Next I created several rough versions, exploring shading techniques until I was happy with the results.
Several close ups of the rough works, focusing on areas I wanted to perfect
3x rough copies were created
Started working on the Illustration Board
(I used a graphite transfer from my trace to ensure proper shape)

Conclusion
I'm glad I had the opportunity to explore value using ink as it is my favorite medium to use. I enjoyed the challenge of creating reflections using ink and gray scale and I believe I learnt a lot from completing this.
