Public realm and placemaking strategy for Waltham Forest Council. Walthamstow High Street is a thriving retail destination home to Europe’s longest street market in the centre of the Borough.
Working with Matter Architecture, the strategy is to celebrate and enhance the existing life of the high street and its connection with the forest and wetlands with a series of narrative interventions to the market and the public realm. The concept of a woodland walk, with clearings along its length – roots, leaves, and ‘tree trunks’ – to communicate local stories and histories and moments of pause and surprise.
Interventions include the celebration of local people, nomenclature, histories, along with contemporary designs in which visitors and community can make urban prints from. Brightly colour groundwork tiles represent fallen leaves and lampposts of tree trunks coloured by CCD Design & Ergonomics.
