SURF Portugal magazine – 1st Place Award

I won the 1st Place Award for the Surf Portugal Magazine
in the contest "Create your own cover celebrating SurfPortugal’s 25 years!"
having as a jury the designer David Carson, among others

The awards ceremony was held at Fnac Portugal

This is the winning work piece of the Portuguese magazine SurfPortugal, the oldest and most emblematic surf magazine in the country.

We were free to choose the form, materials, image type, colours and text for the cover. Our own creativity
was the limit. Surf is a culture, a spirit, and this was my interpretation, with my own approach.

I tore and rolled up a piece of cardboard, in order to simulate waves. The background was made in a way to give continuity to the first field, and thus create the sunset over the sea panoramic. Movement and colour
were essential for me, as surf without waves or a board is not possible. I included a board, also made out of cardboard. I did not find it essential to include a human, as it’s implicit with surfing. However, the 2+5+anos (years) elements suggest a human surfing. All the lettering was created in a way to simulate movement.
I recreated the magazine logo in a way that prompts surfing, and to suggest the movement of the waves.

I chose cardboard as it gave me a plastic possibility of executing my ideas. However, there is irony within,
as cardboard falls apart in water…
