packaging project

This project was to create unique packaging for an invite or gift which related to an art exhibition.
the show was to feature three artists which would then be referenced to some way in the packaging.
Early on I really liked the idea of getting a few things in a box which you then had to use to create something which would then give you the information. this led me to think about artist who invent or use mechanics or kinetics in their work. I began thinking of Tim Hunkin who creates amazing arcade games and Heath Robinson. I ended up with 3 different artists which were David Cranmer, Jim Dixon and Felix Thorn. They all had really good visual work which i thought would realate to my idea well.
Oh yes my idea. I decided to make a slide viewer. I bought a cheap one and broke it into bits. I remade it in a different way using a card box i designed and wooden frames i made. I added a new power supply and after a lot of figuring out managed to recreate the spine of a viewer.
I made up 5 images for the slide. 3 of the artists work with their names on and a couple about the exhibition.
I used a blue print design for this which i used again to make bigger real blue prints to come with the viewer. 1 was instructions on how to put the machine together and one contained details of the artists and exhibiton. I wanted it to look hand drawn.... so i drew it by hand. I did some illustrations of each piece of work to represent these images on the paper.
I made a wooden frame for the slides then made a wooden box to put it all in. on the box and slide frame and the front of the slide viewer i printed words and images using a vinyl template. On the box i then added a dry white wash which gives at a weathered look.
I finished off by making a cut out sheet to make the viewer box and battery case cover.
In the final box i made the kit up so it was easier to understand.
this is the box with a drawing of a Badgermin on the side (badger crossed with therimin by David Cranmer)

stuff in the box
viewer and battery pack with slide below.
the two blueprints printed on tracing paper to give them a blue print type of feel. the instructions are maybe not the most usable but they look cool.
