10/29/10 Wilmington DE: MarthaAnn Szczerba never picked up a paintbrush until five years ago. Inspired by a friend's painting of Saint Francis of Assisi, and without any formal training in art, she has embarked or a remarkable journey of painting. Her subject matter is ecclesiastical, her approach is straightforward, and what would be deemed in more sophisticated art circles as naÔve. Boldly designed and colorfully executed, the paintings of saints and martyrs are never sold, but given away to churches. One of her paintings was recently awarded first prize at the Yorklyn Center for the Arts. "The exhibit was filled with all these beautiful works of art, how could a painting by someone who knows nothing about art win such a prize"? she wondered...Special to The News Journal/SAQUAN STIMPSON
