Students dorm design - part 1 - the contest

Entry project for a design contest.

The theme was to design a standard 4 beds dorm room for students of the Architecture University. The rules required creating modular furniture pieces that would combine 2 (or more) functions, like sleeping and storage, sleeping and work or storage and work, plus an area to prepare food and one to dine. The cost of the materials used for furniture, walls and floors, the lamps and accessories had to fit within a 2000 Euros budget (per room) and were listed in the project.

There were 4 room plans (each from a different city) and contestants were assigned the one closest to their geographical location. Although this was the largest room of the four (24 sqm), my aim was to design a standard framework on which it is possible to build solutions for different and smaller rooms as well.

The design is simple and functional and provides equal conditions for all the students in the room, with generous and well organized individual working space and plenty of room for fun and shared activities in the middle. The light and neutrals colors provide the background for dispalying their personal effects, the bright accent colors spice up the room and the black wall, which will definitely look different in every room, is a canvas waiting for them to unleash their imagination.
