RED EEN PORTRET
Save a portrait
One hundred years ago Jacob Merkelbach started out with his luxurious portrait studio located in the prestigious Hirsch & Co building at Leidseplein. Amsterdam's city archive (Stadsarchief Amsterdam) rises to the occasion by digitalizing and making available online Fotostudio Merkelbach's entire collection of photographic plates. This collection of 40,000 photographic glass plates is amongst the most beautiful in the city's archive, as well as amongst the hardest to preserve due to it's extent and vulnerability.

Studio Beige realized the interactive and graphic design of www.redeenportret.nl. Visitors of this website are invited to identify the portraits made by Fotostudio Merkelbach from 1913 to1969, and by way of ordering prints to attribute to their digitalization.
