Printed out several new photos small and hung in the studio to get inspiration from them and try to pinpoint my photo practice ideas. The plan is to look and write about them … and also moved the paper prints onto the green background to see what that looks like. I put up the bubbles prints (and older XX prints) for the Lyle Ashton Harris studio visit. I hadn’t put them all together before.

Did some printing last night. Exploring an idea of doing a single pass print of each of my screens to see if I can a) see what I am representing and b) tease out the more dynamic compositions ala my photos (per my conversation with Brian R., and Andrew F. see below) -- I was going to do just greens as a way of expressing the lushness that is all around at this peak summer time, but decided once I picked the greens to do other summer colors, including silver and gold.

Okay, so had Lyle Ashton Harris’s group crit on Saturday, which was great. Jen Fitzpatrick, Angeline Meitzler, and me. There was quite a bit of insight even in the 20 minutes we were allotted. I took notes and here’s what was referenced. I am not very good at knowing who all the people are, so the names of artists may not be correct!

The message Lyle gave me was to start writing about why the images for the screens I’ve chosen. Who they are, why I chose them, what about them. Which is pretty much what Andrew said as well. Interesting. He also said that the formal elements of my work are solid … so, yay, I guess? Not sure what that means if I’m honest. But also said to try to place myself in the context of other artists who may be doing similar kinds of work.

Also had a great visit on Friday with Brian Rush, the studio print coordinator. He was wondering about the big green piece and wondering if it was a backdrop? Which I agreed might be the case. Or if I wanted to add elements to it. I do feel that I have flattened my work, made the all-overness of it have a kind of static feeling. I would like to energize it -- he suggested some larger elements, whatever those might be.

But then I need to think about those elements and WHY those elements. Again, with the WHY. What am I saying? What do I want to say exactly? I need to get writing I think!

We hung the big fabric pieces in the front foyer space and discussed ways to activate those big fabric pieces. I wish I had taken pictures! (note to self) He encouraged me to really play and explore lots of ideas. Maybe cut up some of the big purple piece and play with that. I am thinking maybe of working that piece differently and then working it into the bigger piece? Sewing is an option. How to hang it is another thought.

What is fabric and why fabric?

My sister Rachel came and had lunch and brought me some of her fabric too, so now I have more to play with even!

I woke up today (07/02) thinking about the idea of using plexiglass in front of the green piece and am wondering about making it an organic shape vs. rectangles or circles? Or maybe circles? Cut the pieces …. And then of course, which images. WHICH images?

Okay so had a studio visit with the GSS yesterday partial group of Andrew, Lesley and Faun

Apparently it is helpful to make work with intention … and to nail down that intention which is what I intend to do

To that end Andrew suggested I can look at other people’s work who are doing similar things and see what they are saying about it.

Also to make work that is NOT what I am doing and thereby perhaps discover what it is that I am doing. Which appeals to me.

I already had started down this road and am going to start making prints of just my screens by themselves and see where that takes me. I will post more about this after I embark on this adventure.

Here are my thoughts this morning over this directive:
Photos I've taken recently -- this is a big part of my practice where I am trying to look around me all the time, curating my looking and picking out images that appeal and mean something to me ... not sure exactly what the "mean" but I continue to develop my aesthetic and externalization of my viewpoint.

Worked on silkscreen stuff today on my fabric

Hung my one piece up above my other ones. Am wondering about putting the paper ones over my cloth one and how that would work. Or something like that if not these ones ...
Took pics in the rain for possible screen ideas / my sister's rug too! environmental patterns
Thinking about Ruth too … do I have anything I can use from pics with her??
Am loving the architectural landscapes from the windows and others
Had an idea for my sticks project based on this architecture landscapes.

Doing a little research on sticks for my painting project ...
Also sketching for composition / shapes / exploring colors using small sketches with watercolor and collecting things / looking at collections on the counter -- kitchen pictures are important me. The Kitchen holds a particular significance for me as a place of family I think?
