Archive is a symmetrical, capture the flag map for Unreal Tournament 3.  This map was designed around speed and gameplay flow, with a low gravity chasm in the middle.  Walls in each base are designed to slow the enemies coming in, while providing easier access on the way out.  To balance this, health pickups are placed in a way that would make an opponent fleeing with the flag take a longer route should he want to pick them up, making him a target for a longer period of time on this small map.  A single slow volume exists on either side of the map, which can be used to great effect, or great disaster.  The low gravity in the middle, coupled with the teleporters, allows for multiple routes to and from a base, and the low walls can be skipped with the use of the translocator gun.
This center chasm has about one half of the normal gravity as the rest of the level, which allows for increased mobility while in the air.  When coupled with the floating platform in the middle, players can execute clever, last minute maneuvers.
The visual style for this level is fairly simple, yet atmospheric.  It is supposed to convey a large facility that is used for storing something mysterious.
The middle of the level extends off into the distance, and the walls on the side are populated with roughly body-sized containers.  The darkness of the cavern and the size of surrounding machinery make the level seem like it is part of something much larger.
A simple, top-down view of the play area.
This view shows only the static meshes used, of which there are just about 1900.
Shown here is the preproduction for this map, recreated in Photoshop.  The final version of this level came out with just about the exact same layout, with just one or two minor changes.
