Philippine Mythology: The Bakunawa

The Bakunawa, a well-known character in Philippine Mythology, is a huge serpent that governs the sky and devours the moon.
One of the most famous stories is how the Bakunawa fell in love with a mortal woman from one of the local tribes. The head of the said tribe found out about their forbidden affair and reduced her family to ashes. Out of anger, the Bakunawa sought revenge by attempting to eat the 7 moons created by Bathala. When it was about to devour the last one, Bathala intervened and punished the serpent by banishing it from its home. According to locals, eclipses occur whenever the Bakunawa tries to come back to its home.
