Endogenous Collage

A marriage of constructive and deconstructive processes and concepts; endogenous, derivative, collage and in this instance, digital.

Using a base-image, often of my own capture but not necessarily, I copy and paste onto that base-image only elements of itself until I've either obscured the representational nature of the image or, paradoxically, brought focus to representational aspects of the original image.

Sometimes it is more effective to use appropriated images as I'm not walking into the visual experience having a preconceived notion as to its meaning, context, intent, etc. This ambiguity or mystery can allow for a fresh and more intuitive subjective response to the original image, which I explore and build upon until satisfied regardless of how close or how far from the original I've gotten in final output.

At times I'm purely procedural, nearly mechanized in my counting of cursor strokes or transparency percentages as I construct patterns, arrange colors and direct specific effects much the way a trained hand/eye would with directly physical media. Other times I'm more gestural. Of course, there are times I'm gesturally mechanized.

Though digital in output, the process is very much physical with a feeling of percussive collage and mushy wet painting to it. I push things around and layer them to my pleasure with varying obstacles of frustration; pressing on until I finally pull away from it for a glance or stare that commands I stop.
