Everyone has seen a pair of sneakers hanging from a power line somewhere in the city.

That was the main inspiration for this piece.

 

An account of my inspiration in more detail:  I was walking home one day when I saw two city workers taking down a bunch of shoes that had been flung onto a low hanging power line. I looked down at the nasty pairs of sneakers and saw a small sprout of a plant beginning to grow out of the muck that had accumulated in the shoe. It was then and there that I got this idea and I asked the workers if I could have a couple of the pairs they had taken down. I took them to my studio made a couple of molds and began slip casting them into the flower pots you see here.
