National Populations By Area

For this project I engineered a coded visual system that provides insight into raw data from the most recent census. The information plotted on the graph is the population of every country recorded in both 2000 to 2010. Poster is 20.5x19," with type set in Whitney.
Each country has its own line; collectively they form a circle. Every country has 2 circular points on its line: the 2000 data point (solid color) and the 2010 data point (solid with stroke). The gap between the 2 data points expresses how much of a + or – population shift has occurred in 10 years.
Every line is labelled with the country's name and population data. The lighter gray number is 2000 data, while the black data is 2010. Each country's data is color coded by continent, and the countries are arranged clockwise around the circle from those with the largest to smallest areas. Russia has the largest area, so it is at the "noon" spot on the graph, and all other countries with smaller areas follow after it.
2000 data in light gray; 2010 data in black
The rings on which the data points are plotted represent a logarithmic division of population. The bottom right contains a blown up section of the countries with the smallest populations so that they are more legible.
For a better perspective on the world's smallest nations who reside at the center of the circle, I enlarged their data in the bottom right.
The resulting data visualization yielded a striking spiral formation.
