The public bath house project began with an investigation of a form bridging the boundaries of surface to volume, interior to exterior, and skeleton to skin. In considering what these characteristics could offer to the context of a contemporary public bath house located at a site in DUMBO, Brooklyn, the following design emerged. In this proposal, the columns are composed of solar tubing that carry light from the shaded site below grade to the underground bath house. The columns also: reinforce a natural pathway through the pedestrian-heavy site; collapse onto themselves to form a plaza area with reflecting pools that form a geometric pattern present throughout the entire structure and program; act as rainwater catch basins; and serve a structural role.
