ENABLE: DISABILITY & ACCESS

How might we improve accessibility and disrupt ableism in nonprofit organizations?
Disability inequality is an issue that is commonly overlooked, but affects all kinds of people. Even within nonprofit organizations that help marginalized communities, there is a lack of disability competence & awareness.

Our Approach
Enable is an nonprofit organization (NPO) that provides workshops and accessibility training to nonprofit organizations that serve marginalized communities.

My Role
Designer & Photographer: Designed geometric patterns for visual identity, business system, board game cards & envelope; served as primary portrait & merchandise photographer
Researcher: conducted interviews, created the Enable budget, researched sponsorship/partnership information for funding

Duration
8 weeks
BRANDING AN UNDERREPRESENTED ISSUE

We conducted extensive background research and in-depth interviews with people with disabilities, nonprofit employees, and a UC Davis professor who taught a course in disability justice. Additionally, we created different case studies to study the campaign strategies of similar organizations.

From this information, we visually represented two reoccurring themes:

1. Logo: Invisible and visible disabilities
2. Asymmetrical border & geometric patterns: Reframing accessibility
INSTITUTIONAL CHANGE THROUGH EDUCATION

To go beyond just creating awareness, Enable holds a workshop series and conference to educate other nonprofits about accessibility. Our goal is to create lasting institutional change through education. We developed marketing materials and merchandise, including a custom board game, to promote these events.
SPREADING AWARENESS

On the off season of our workshop series, we will also hold a general campaign educating a more general audience about accessibility and disability.
THANK YOU FOR VIEWING OUR PROJECT!

We believe that disability is not the fault of the individual, but rather a mismatch of their needs and the environment they live in. Enable hopes to create an environment that better suits the needs of marginalized people with disabilities through institutional change.
