Lanternlight Sound Branding

I had withdrawn in forest, and my song
Was swallowed up in leaves that blew alway.

Background

"Lantenlight sound aims to illuminate your creative ideas with appropriate sound production, recording, engineering, mixing and related services and advice.  We understand that you are driven by ideas, and that the expression of these ideas in film or music is the most important thing.  We aim to help make your vision a reality."

Lanternlight is an Australian based business providing sound recording, mixing, production and related services to the music and film industry. While meeting the technologically advanced standards of the industry, Lanternlight has adopted an old school approach that emphasisez craftmanship and quality rather than convenience and conformity.

Lanternlight has been founded by Ben Mansfield, a sound engineer and musician, with a growing interest in post-production sound and film-making.

As a sound engineer he worked for a number of years in Canberra's  "The Studio" recording albums such as Ernie Van Veen's "One tiny life", and other projects with Canberra scene stalwarts such as DJ Gosper and Jim Sharrock.  He also has significant experience in live sound, having mixed in a variety of venues from folk festivals to small vibrant pubs.

As a musician he has been an integral member of the band Tribe, songwriting and performing guitar and percussion on albums including 'The message stick' and 'The Gathering' (both released through New World Music).  However, he also has experience playing guitar in a heavy metal band, and his own songwriting and musical sensibility is influenced by a diverse range of performers from Dead can Dance and Loreena McKennitt to Thomas Feiner and Pantera.

Recently he has turned his attention to studio acoustics, construction & design.  He has spent a number of years designing and constructing a studio in Canberra ACT.  His sound production business, lanternlight sound, has been many years in conception, and will operate out of the new studio, as well as on location.

He is motivated by the power of ideas, images and sounds to capture the emotions and the imagination.  Apart from his interests in the music industry, he likes to read novels, poetry and non fiction.  He loves the poetry of Robert Frost, and the writings of Christopher Hitchens amongst many others.  He enjoys radio national, particularly Late Night Live with Phillip Adams. He has also been completing a bachelor of arts part time, studying  philosophy, english and ancient greek.  Where possible he builds and designs his own studio furniture.  He likes the process of bringing imagined spaces and objects into being, hence taking on the project of designing and building the studio, as well as its furnishings.

Concept One - Stylised Lantern

This concept is based on a vintage oil lantern, stylised in a vintage style and paired with a hand-drawn logotype (the "Sound" particle). Possibly the more versatile of the two concepts based on this lantern, as the line work is quite clean and lends itself very well to any type of application (including embossing, letterpress or embroidery).

It also allows for a stamp-based printing process: a logo stamp can be created in two different sizes and used to create letterhead and business cards.

The hand-writen part (Sound) can be changed to any other field the brand will be applied to.

The tagline is of course optional and open to discussion. The current one - "Per aspera ad astra" - means "Through effort to the stars". In "to kill a mockingbird" it as been translated as "From mud to the stars".
Concept Two - Illustrative Lantern

This concept is also based on the lantern imagery, but in a more illustrative, hand drawn sense. It is less adaptable to embossing or other processes that require clean, precise lines, but will work well in print and as stamp.

Would look quite good printed on recycled paper and/or stamped on kraft paper products.
Concept Three - Magic Lantern

The third concept (and my favourite) is based on a lantern of a different kind: the magic lantern, at first the stock in trade of illusionists and magicians, and later the precursor of the moving pictures.
