BRIGHTLINGSEA REGENT FOOTBALL CLUB
Crest Redesign Concept

Passion project for the rebrand and design of the Brightlingsea Regent Football Club crest.

Formed by a merger of Brightlingsea United and Regent Park Rangers in 2005, they are currently members of the Isthmian Premier Division and play at North Road.

'The R's' are from a coastal town in Essex and their crest represents this by displaying three half English lions - half ships motifs. This type of character is utilised by many cinque port locations (coastal towns in Kent, Essex and Sussex). The colours on their crest are red, pale blue and gold - however, they traditionally play in black ad red stripes.
Existing Crest
The existing Brightlingsea crest is presented in an ornate shield border. The shield is split down the centre. The left side has the red backdrop with the three halved lions in this section. The lions have deliberately been cut off when they cross the centre line. The way the shield is shaped means the size of each lion differs in shape in order to fit inside its section. The right side is coloured light blue and includes the three ship sections. Again these have been cut off when they meet the centre line and also align with their corresponding lion. The character elements are coloured gold along with the team name displayed below.

The look of the current badge has the foundations of an uncomplicated and clear design, favouring that modern style. Aspects however seem to be too intricate and therefore doesn't make aspects of the crest as clear as they could be; by this I mean the character elements; especially the halved lions. The shape of the shield cramps up the characters to the point the scale needs to be altered in order to fit them in. Also, the outline around the characters could be tidied up to present them in a more clear light.

A major factor I intend to alter is the shield the design is set within. By changing the style of the border and shield, the main elements of the crest will be able to be displayed in a less congested way that will bring the crest up to date.
The main components of the existing shield have been transferred and utilised in this new design. Already having a strong foundation and elements that represented the identity of the club; these components have now been illustrated in a simplified manner and brought together to form a modern crest design.

The intricate and ornate shield of its predecessor has in fact been replaced by another intricate border. The nautical rope circle, whilst successfully representing the clubs identity of being from a coastal town with harbour, also displays the crests elements in a much more modern/ clear fashion. The rope basically acts as circles border with all the main features of the crest set within.

The badge has again been split down the middle and its sectioned coloured in the manner of the existing crest. With how the crests foundations have been set out, the character elements can now be displayed in a much more aesthetically pleasing manner. The scale of each of the three Lions/ship halves remains consistent with plenty of surrounding space as to not seem as cramped as on the existing crest.

The main colours have stayed the same to ensure the clubs historical identity. The gold used on the characters is also utilised on the nautical rope to ensure continuity and stick to using as few colours as possible. The teams name curves around the crest instead of just being displayed below, ensuring that it is an integral part of the creation.
Single colour Variant (1)
Single colour Variant (2)
The way the logo has been constructed means it can be displayed in a single colour variant. This is very important as having too many colours can be hard to construct a sleek final design when it comes to embroidery or being put on other mediums. By being able to use only one colour over the whole design also means it is easier to change; for instance on home and away kits the background colour of the shirt would define what colour the crest will be.

This new logo has been created by taking aspects from the existing crest, reworking them into a simplified form whilst still ensuring their representation remains genuine and meaningful; in the case of using the nautical rope as the structure of the crest as the club come from a coastal location. All elements have been presented in a modern, dynamic format that is structured and minimal, brings Brightlingsea crest up to date with modern design.
