Handcrafted Book Cover Redesign

Handcrafted Book Cover Redesign
Challenged with selecting a classic novel and redesigning the cover of it to make it better. All attributes must be handcrafted. For this project I selected, "The Giver" by Lois Lowry, to redesign the cover. I painted everything on the cover and did hand lettering using both micron pens as well as small paintbrushes. The sled is a cutout that I also painted and glued onto the cover. My inspiration was the main idea in the novel that the people cannot see colors except for the old man, the Giver, and then Jonas who is set to become the new Giver. The first time Jonas begins to see color is on an apple, hence the red apple with the grayscale brain that takes the shape of a bite out of the apple. The other time Jonas is able to see the color red is in a memory. The significance of this is that the people also do not have the ability to have memories. The back cover features a simple pattern of symmetrical houses because everything in the town the book focuses on revolves around the idea of sameness.
