Downtown Charleston, SC
While Fort Sumter basks in all of its renowned glory in the middle of the Charleston harbor, the lesser known Fort Moultrie is perched quietly across the water on the south western tip of Sullivan’s Island.  There it has been built and rebuilt since the revolutionary war – a singularly inclusive monolith of coastal military history.  Crossing the street to enter the fort, it feels small, like an anthill made of bricks and concrete and wood.  Passing through its fortified foyer, the dark hallway opens up into a sunlit courtyard of cannons and canary yellow brick.
