Costume Design - Chingay 2019

Costume Design for Chingay 2019
Art Direction, Costume Design, Make Up Artist
Year of Project November 2018 - February 2018
I was given the opportunity by Jamiyah Singapore (a non-profit organisation) to design and create the overall look for 36 individuals that was chosen to participate in Chingay Parade 2019.

This annual event is characterised by vibrant performers in elaborates costumes from different ethnicity, cultures and backgrounds; dazzling display of floats; huge intricate props and structures and cultural performances from all around the world. Chingay now owns the reputation as one of Asia’s largest street performance and float parade, a colourful epitome of the country’s multi-cultural society!

With participants from Jamiyah Singapore ranging from as young as 7 years old to 50 years old and is one of the groups who are representing the Malay community, I wanted to create a costume that is traditional yet has modern elements and lastly practical and comfortable for all age groups. As Jamiyah Singapore is home to many welfare services to the less privileged and disadvantaged, I wanted the costume and make up to reflect the strong souls of the participants in conquering life battles.

Handmade elements - Cutting of CDs and pasting on costume, Male Tanjak (by @tanjakmahkotasg)
