Act II Playhouse Community Service Design Proposal

ACT II Playhouse
A collaborative community service proposal
This project was a collaborative project introduced to us by the husband of the professor involved with us in the development of this project. I, along with Giana Castelli, and Connor Hansen comprised one of 5 groups within the INTD 304 - Community Service for Interior Design class. The prompt was to create a usable and inviting space for the Act II Playhouse in Ambler, PA. This project also included a budget, actual clients, and a real location to design within, unlike the majority of projects within a school design studio. The concept introduced to the Act II Playhouse employees was of a homey and inviting space that caters to both the employees and the theatre's primary clientele; senior citizens.
Utilizing a lighter color palette for wall paint and texture as well as upholstery enables the lobby to achieve an environment of comfort one can only find in a residential, more specifically an intimate, home environment. Proposing the use of contract-grade, residential textiles and finishes broadens the "analogous" color scheme. We chose a grouping of beige, tan, and cream colors to invite but not distract. Material choice consisting of wood, stone, and area rugs offer both acoustic advantages and visual warmth.
Through the use of soft cushioning on all furniture along with wood for it's acoustic properties relative to the existing condition of LVL allows for private conversation before users are let into the primary space and the performance begins.
After 3 iterations of the floor plan, this is our group's finalized floor plan and furniture arrangement for Act II.
In an exterior perspective, one can see how the new cladding and ticket booth window will fit into the existing building and merge with the surrounding environment.
An eastern-facing perspective shows both a modified ceiling with lighting and the furniture layout for the visitors at Act II. The chalkboard in the center-top is to be used by visitors to sign their name, or write a quip about the performance scheduled.
This final western-perspective shows the updated entry sequence, as well as a new ADA-accessible bathroom, something that was crucial to the remodeling fit-out scheme.
