In response to an increasing number of foster children in the state, Ohio launched an adoption and foster care public awareness campaign on January 20. The campaign features a new website, which shares information and resources regarding both adoption and foster care and stresses Ohio's need for more families to get involved. According to the website, nearly 16,000 children in Ohio are in custody of children's services agencies, whether with foster parents or in residential care. There are also 2,600 children waiting to be adopted. Ohio already has more than 6,000 registered foster parents, but a need for more has become evident, as the number of children in care of the state has increased 28 percent over the the past five years.

The website isn't the only method the state is employing to drive interest in foster care. Rather, it is part of a broader public awareness campaign that also includes targeted social media hits and display advertisements. In the past, foster care recruitment was handled at the local level by individual municipalities, but elevating priorities relating to foster care was one of the first executive orders of Governor Mike DeWine.
