Appland skunkworks featuring Who2Call

Appland(tm) was conceived as a skunkworks for mobile application conception, design and creation - a self contained unit operating inside Vodafone Australia.

Appland had a charter to produce 25 consumer facing apps in its first year of operation - testing consumer interest and learning about the apps ecosystem, design principles and pricing models.
The Appland experiment ran from December 2009 to December 2011 when Doug negotiated to lift the team out of Vodafone to join a different company.

Two major applications developed by the Appland team were Who2Call and Cricket Live Australia.

Doug Maloney's role :
* Appland concept and founder.
* Conceived Who2Call and led the business engagement and design & development team.
* Cricket Live Australia Business owner and design/dev team manager (2011/2012)
Who2Call
A standout application from the Appland team was Who2Call. The app proposition and development timing lined up beautifully with Vodafone's market launch of free Vodafone-to-Vodafone phone calls - the app provided the proof point for consumers who could now see which of their contacts could be called for free.
Major design considerations were that the app should complement, not replace, the existing contacts app on the phone, and it should be consistently focussed on performing the task at hand, rather than adding in other superfluous functions.

The app has been downloaded more than 1 million times and rates 4.5 stars in iTunes app store.
