Book design: Galago

Redesign of Galago, magazine for alternative comics. The result was a book-size anthology with some short stories, interviews and other texts in the mix. Galago is left-wing, so it felt natural to find inspiration in Soviet constructivist design from the 1920's.
The cover illustration by Simon Gärdenfors enhances the constructivist 20's feeling of the East, adding a layer of 50's sci-fi and horror from the West

Detail from the contributor pages. The fonts Marfhaus (department head) and Borgstrand (contributor names) were important to get the constructivist feeling. Both are drawn by Swedish font designer Martin Lexelius. In Marfhaus he took inspiration from the Bauhaus movement and Futura, and Borgstrand is derived from an old factory sign in Martin’s home town.
Format for illustrated short stories. Department head fonts: Marfhaus and Borgstrand.
