Alternative designs/drafts
The story is about a teenage-girl that has the power to conjure primitive weapons. I had originally positioned the knife coming out of her hand in a very powerful, controlled way, but the author thought that it should be pointed toward her, since the character lacks control and has a lot of self destructive impulses. The story is also set in downtown Phoenix, so I brought in the valley's mountains and a bit of the city skyline, minimizing the amount of sky shown on the cover to make it feel more claustrophobic- it is a dystopia, after all.
