CATRINAS
A Mexican Tradition
I designed and crafted the dresses for three Catrina sculptures made by several art students of UABC, Tijuana. The Catrinas were displayed inside the art room Alvaro Blancarte for the annual altar competition of the Day of the Dead and a week later they were moved to the Tijuana International Airport for a longer stay.
Each Catrina is about 3 mts standing and required more than 5 mts of fabric each. The outfits were all inspired by classic Catrina costumes represented in small statues of mexican folklore.

The budget for the costume design was low so I had to sort the fabrics, searching for low cost materials that did not affect in a negative way the outcome. As for the head pieces, I designed them according to each costume and provided the materials but gave instructions to other team members to elaborate them.
The Catrinas played a special part in the altar, which took up a whole room and was a delight to all the senses: creatures inspired by mexican surreal artists walked around the room holding candles and incense while  live music played.
