Vintage Books asked for submissions for a potential UK edition of Colson Whitehead's autobiographical title Sag Harbor with its themes of coming-of-age and feeling strangely out of place as a black kid growing up living and working in the predominantly white holiday area of the Hamptons in upstate New York.
The image used on the cover was inspired by the main character's job at a waffle shop in Sag Harbor. It was taken by me and given an over-saturated, slightly cross-processed feel in Photoshop to give it a 70's feel.
The Sag Harbor lettering is hand drawn rather than being a typeface, and then edited and kearned to give it better legibility on the spine.
