Independent Cinema NYC

Independent Cinema NYC Film Series Poster/Brochure
After Jim Jarmusch's Stranger Than Paradise, New York emerged as the North American capital of independent cinema which was now attached to a street-smart bohemian cool. Infused with an oppositional ethos, New Yorkers' anti-corporate outlook spread to film students and art houses everywhere in the late 1980s and early '90s. The scene combined a determined auteur sensibility, emphasis on place, and sense of community and purpose that recalled France's New Wave and provided a seductive example for the upcoming American independent movement.

Project Brief
Design a poster 22 x 33 inches vertical format, which can be cut up and made into a brochure, 5.5 x 11 inches. Presented with two versions, one as a whole poster and one cut up and bound with staples into a 12 page French-fold self-cover brochure.
Research a brief synopsis of each film which should appear under the title. Research images at the same time. Add dates and times, one film per week. One panel/page becomes front cover.

Featured Films:
Do the Right Thing and She's Gotta Have It by Spike Lee, Sid & Nancy by Alex Cox, Downtown 81 by Edo Bertoglio, Permanent Vacation and Stranger Than Paradise by Jim Jarmusch, Paris Is Burning by Jennie Livingston, Alphabet City, Subway Riders by Amos Poe, Wild Style by Charlie Ahearn.

Design process started off by considering the composition of the poster. Worked on five structural sketches leaning towards the idea of a poster more than concerning the brochure version.

Select and develop two directions.
Add in the rest of the film information and for each direction, try at least three different type solutions.
Consider the relationship of text and image, hierarchy, organization and detailing.

Further develop and refine one direction as the final.
Final Version:
