Designed and developed coinboxes & office accessories for Jawaja Leather Association(JWA), Rajasthan India.The objective was to understand the craft, its origin, and purpose, then give design solutions which should have the essence of the craft being natural, handmade and sturdy but also help the craft to broaden its consumer area.

Jawaja Leather Association (JLA)
JLA, A Constituent of the ARTISAN alliance Jawaja - AAJ, Established around 1975 is a group of local artisans comprising from the remote villages surrounding the BEAWAR city which includes JAWAJA, BEAWAR KHAS, SARMALIYA etc. in District AJMER in Rajasthan state (INDIA). All are famous for AGE-OLD Traditional art of Making handicraft goods from NATURAL LEATHER and COLORS.

In India there are hardly any designs for coinboxes in the market, though its a very useful product. So I thought of introducing coinboxes as a unique product for Jawaja craftsmen.

First prototype for a desk/office tray

The uniqueness of the tray lies in the construction which reduces the leather usage to half. It has been constructed by using the polished surface (front) of leather as the top surface rather then the typical way of using the polished side on the back of the tray and adding one more piece of leather on the top surface.

Cross-supports were added to add strength in the first prototype. In the second prototype the width of the sides of the tray was increased to eliminate the cross-supports.
