The White Stallion - Homemade Wine Project

DE WITTEN HENGST
- homemade wine with a feisty personality -

Our Witten Hengst (White Stallion) Project started around begin 2017. After several years of pruning without any produce, we were able to harvest a lot of grapes (for the first time). Of course we wouldn't just throw them away, so we started to look into making wine. Hours of reading, reading and reading later we were ready to start.

Just one more thing needed... a name!

The house we now live in, was a café/pub back in the days (over 60 years ago). It was called Den Hengst (The Stallion) and was a known neighbourhood café. This was the perfect approach for the name we were looking for. The 'Witten' (white) is more of a reference to the typical image of a white stallion from the Camargue, an area in France known for its grey/white horses.

BATCH 2017
Our first accomplishment: Den witten hengst - Batch 2017.
A great refreshening white wine, perfect als aperitif. It's a light white, made from our own Vitis Boskoop Glory grapes. Despite being fairly light, it has a quite full and rich flavour with a fruity and slightly dry-ish finish.

We made 2 varieties, a blue and a yellow type.
The blue one is a pure Boskoop Glory wine that has aged in our own normal barrels.
Our yellow type is also a pure Boskoop Glory but it has aged on oak barrels, which gave it a more rich and strong finish.

Both were tasted by all those who wanted and deemed very tasty.

BATCH 2018
This year, 2018, we're making our white wine again but also a new project: a rosé (pink) wine. We've had a very warm summer here in Belgium, which is maybe not that great for us, but it is for our grapes. We had about 10 liters of juice more than last year. Which is why we're tryingsomething new and challenging.

The white is again made purely of our great Vitis Boskoop Glory grapes.
For our new Rosé, we're combining the Boskoop Glory with Chardonnay grapes, which are a great addition to our Glory's. They add a recognizable ligneous (wood-ish) and rich flavour.
The red wine is, at the moment, just a concept I was also trying out. We're hoping to add our own red wine to the collection within a few years from now.

For this year's batch, I am experimenting with some ideas for new labels and a new logo.
Some mockups I made as an example for the presentation of the (experimental) new labels.

As a finisher, here's just a little taste of a few of our grave vines.
Plenty of other vines have been planted recently so
To be continued...
(please note that this wine is not for sale... yet)
