A Metaphor for Sustainability

Free Standing Window with Book Sculpture (reused objects). A Metaphor for Sustainability.

When contemplating sustainability, I think of a book because although it is visualized in a physical context, it is valued in a less tangible context, as it embodies and preserves ideas.  Sustainability is an idea that endures only if passed on and shared. In addition to including the book form, moths were also incorporated in the piece to illustrate the act of moral deterioration.  As the moths eat their way through and destroy the idea of stewardship toward the environment, the principals and foundations on which we have built society fall apart.  Like books, if we choose not to take care of the earth which is on loan to us, it too will decay.  The window provides a sense of hope to the piece, with light shining through a filthy window to provide an ethereal glow.  I wanted to have the window free-standing to as to create a surreal environment that would play into the fantastical feel of  the tiomoth sculpture merging from the book.  The window sill has been painted and sanded, antiqued  and aged, as has been the atmosphere by the detrimental emissions we give off on a daily basis.  We spend so much of our time indoors that windows have become our portals to the natural world.  The Inspiration for this piece comes from my driven and loving sister, Jessica, whose love of the environment and dedication to its sustainability left me with a strong desire to create good from a profession that is often not eco-friendly.
