Trevor McClelland's profile

Product of Eugene Apprenticeship Program

I was a mentor for Lane Art Council's "Product of Eugene" program, which is an apprenticeship opportunity for Junior High and High School students. In the 10 week sessions the students become familiar with the field of Product Design and learned to design, build, and present their own products. I was in charge of choosing the theme and the curriculum, and leading them through the design process.
Session 1: Zero-Waste Products
Experimenting with making bio-degradable plastics
Testing the biodegradability of our home-made plastic
Analyzing the wasteful packaging that we bring home from the grocery store
Scavenging for recycled materials
Testing the design
Using recycled signage to create roof for MicroShelter. The shelter was later donated to a homeless member in Eugene.
Session 2: Alternative Transportation
Using the drill press
Learning to weld with oxy-acetylene torch
Testing scooter prototype
Laser cutting grip tape
Final Product: The 3-Person Scooter
Session 3: Whiteaker Street Library
