Migrate Magazine is an art feature publication released quarterly. They asked me to contribute an illustration to the Hero edition. I based my illustration on Wolraad Waltemade, a dairy farmer who witnessed the demise of the Dutch sailing ship De Jong Thomas when it washed up in a howling Cape Storm in 1773.
Wolraad rode his trusty horse, Vonk, into the sea 7 times bringing back sailors 2 at a time. On his eight swim out to the wreck Wolraad and his horse drowned when too many sailors tried to cling to him in desperation sinking them all. Wolraad’s courageous act saved 14 men.
