Jouwe Custom for Toy Art Gallery Group Show, Oct 2-Nov 2, 2010
I knew from day 1 that I wanted to do an Ultraman theme for this custom, as the piece was already cast in the bright red vinyl. I also made a conscious decision not to use masking for this custom, as I wanted to keep it simple and draw directly on the piece. Silver Sharpie pens were used initially, and then I painted over with Golden Silver Acrylic. Sure, masking and spraying would've give me a more even and uniform surface, but I actually like seeing evidence of the brushstrokes and some of the translucency show through. Something about how the actual Ultraman costumes always had a very human quality to them, what with their wrinkles and simple but bold graphics. The only addition was the obvious eye coverings, which I sculpted out of Magic Sculpt and applied directly over the existing eye region. Overall, I'm very pleased with how this one turned out and hope it finds a good home after it's one month display at Toy Art Gallery.
