Hello E.T, a wordplay on Human Enhancement Technology, was a project I participated in at MAD-faculty. Together with four other students from different divisions of the faculty we performed design research to develop a viewpoint on the subject of human enhancement with the aid of design. Throughout this research project we formulated an opinion about human enhancement technologies and projected this in a design. In this case design is a very broad term; our research group attended workshops, invented products and filmed documentaries to clarify the concept of human enhancement. We found that humans are not capable of foreseeing the ethical and societal consequences of actions with a possible severe impact they undertake today. We created a fictional mirror of the present world where it is possible to implant artificial gills in the human body, so that people could breathe under water for a limited time. Starting from this idea we thought about how such a new possibility could change our world in several ways over a given period of time. To bring this concept into real life, our research group set up a fictional company that commercialized artificial gills by making them available to the public. With a marketing campaign, a virtual website and an e-shop we observed how people would react upon such new technologies.
