Signage system of Natura Artis Magistra in Amsterdam (Mijksenaar).
Concept of the system
One of the challenges:
Visitors discovered after a day of sightseeing that they didn't see all the important animals of the zoo.
Solution:
Follow order of the signpost:
First layer: Artis Walk
Second layer: 15 Most important animals of the zoo.
Third layer: Facilities of the Zoo, like toilets or exit.
Artis Walk (the 'Big 15' animals of the zoo, related too the 'Big 5' of South Africa).
You have the opportunity to see the 'Big 15' by following the signs saying 'Artis walk', but you also have the possibility to choose your own way. For example if you want to see only 6 animals, than you can follow the illustrations of these specific 6 animals, visible as the second layer on the signposts. We decided to split the animals and the facilities, because they are two different destinations/ subjects. So on the third layer you will always find the facilities, on the second layer the animals and the first layer the Artis walk. At the signpost itself you will find an explanation of all illustrations and pictograms.
