"The Sandbox" is a One Act Play by Edward Albee. While reading the script a personal memory came to mind. I had the unfortunate experience of watching my Grandmother and Great-Grandmother develope Alzheimer's Syndrome and Dimensia. I felt that this is what Grandma was going through, and with that her daughter had to become Mommy to take care of her.
The first Character I drew was Mommy, who is Grandma's daughter. The feel I had for this character was that she was of a higher class. Or wanted to be. I have her in tight dress that is ment to be restricting. I also wanted her hair to be down and flowing along with heels to wear.
I wanted Daddy to start off in a lot of clothing and as he says that he is hot the more he has to work with and take off. I feel that Daddy was almost a banker that doesn't want to do anything for his mother in law.
For the Musician I wanted him to have more of a beach feel. He is in black dress pants that he can roll up. With a white shirt that is rolled up. I also like the idea of him playing the violin. This idea came to be with The Idylls of Pegasus by Richard Meyer, which is a piece of music that is pretty much the story of Pegasus, life to death. At the end the violins have this beautiful moment as Pegasus is turned into a constalation.
The Young Man we find out at the end is here to take Grandma away. I wanted the young man to be in a pair of swim trunks as he was running and would be shirtless. Along with him running I wanted the Young Man to be in pair of tennis shoes that where flat and cut off at the ankle. Very much like a pair of vans. I wanted his over all color pallet to be dark for a symbol of death.

Looking at religion for this I searched Bible versus that contained death for a tattoo. I just became aware that I flipped the numbers for the tattoo I wanted to give the Young Man. I want his tattoo to read "Revelation 20:14". The quote from KJV is: "And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death." I feel like this quote is extreamly important to my main thought of Grandma having Alzhimer's Disease. Often when the person physically dies, they have died mentally in the aspect that they no longer rember loved ones or memories they once charished.
With Grandma I wanted her to be rather plain. That she had been on a farm and was going back their to be happy. I also wanted her hair to be in a braid that fell down her back.
I feel that Mommy would be best in a purple dress, as at one point in history purple was a expressive and was a symbol of royalty.
To show off the vest that Daddy would wear I have the vest showing on one side of the sketch, while on the other would be a suit jacket he would start the show off in. I felt that to somewhat contrast Mommy, Daddy needed to be darker like death was already there. But as he took clothing off Daddy's clothing would become lighter and show that Grandma was going into a better place and would be happy once again.
For the swim truncks of lthe young man I wanted a deep purple which is in the shadow of what is on his pants. I really liked this font for his tattoo. The audience would instantly be drawn to the boldness of Revelation, while most people may not understand the number portion.
I found this picture of these flowers I really liked for Grandma. I also liked the color of the lightest pink ones. Underneath the transparent paper is a swatch of a pale purple that I love for Grandma. It would almost be a faded version of Mommy's purple. Showing that they are related.
I really enjoyed this project. We where able to let our creativity be our limit. I definetly learned more about drawing people and color palets and hidden stories just from this One Act.
