Hiking with Dogs

This is one of the on going animal theme series. 2018 is year of the dog so I came up with this image celebrating the relationship between a human and a dog. I also wanted to capture the idea of they both enjoying the nature, hiking, outdoor activities in general. Here are some of the very initial idea sketches on sticky notes. I usually do 50 or so of this quick and rough sketches. Then I select the ones that has some potential to be developed further. © Junichi Tsuneoka

Based on my initial sketches, I put them together in a bigger piece of paper to start thinking about the actual composition. In this stage, I still keep the quality very rough not to worry about details so much. © Junichi Tsuneoka

For this stage, the sketch is fully developed to how I want as a finished piece. I start adding good amount of details and really think about the composition of the entire image. Once I am comfortable with this stage, that means I am ready to scan this and take it to the computer. © Junichi Tsuneoka

I scanned the finished sketch and I placed the image on an Illustrator document to start tracing with pen tool. As I work, I do quite a bit of interpretation from the raw drawing to vector drawing. But basically I follow the guideline of the pencil sketch.

Adding colors and details, this is the close up of the finished design. I fine tuned everything and made any necessary adjustments.
