Calligraphy 2018, Part II

A collection of letters…from 2018. Calligraphy and hand lettering.
Above, is Michael Keaton addressing the Carnegie Hero Commission and that is my work on stage with him. I show a few photos here and a video of me working on the project. It is a book listing the honored heroes and a large broadside of Andrew Carnegies' words when establishing the Fund.
Gold (gilding) and illumination is the "old stuff" or classic or "old school" way.
Below, a similar piece written out on vellum, with gold (shell) and illumination. These pieces are intense to do as there is a high level of craft and no easy fixes for mistakes.
A few more "works", random collection of things I have been working on that feature calligraphic letters or writing.
This is one of the most difficult type of commissions as it is for a person who is a calligrapher themselves and collectors. Every stroke, and every letter counts.
This was a quote of Martin Luther King. I was honored to be commissioned by Design is Play to do this piece. This is an original (brush-lettered) on paper. Nothing digital. (I offered to do it digital, but they wanted ink and paper)
Some Royal Mail stamps for this past Christmas. Commission/collaboration with Supple Studio, Ltd.
Another original on paper for a collector. I won't lie, these pieces are demanding. Broad-edge Roman capitals and pointed pen script capitals.
This quote explores the character the ruling pen imparts to capital letters. Done with different color walnut inks.
One of many brush experiments with Fraktur. I have played with these form for decades. Its like playing an old standard song.
Flaunt; wine label sketch, not used. But fun anyway.
Page from my notebook.
My upcoming book on brush Roman capitals features exemplars done in color like you see here. I had to use up to five brushes.
Well, thats all for now. Thank you for looking. Please comment if you like. I would love to see comments on the YouTube video as well. Its a vote for calligraphy, (which needs all the help it can get). Thank you.
