The brief: select a short story from the Best Australian Stories 2017 and put
together a literary experience for readers.

THE STORY
Glisk by Josephine Rowe

Glisk centers around two half-siblings, Fynn and Raf, from idyllic adolescence to adulthood. Fynn serves a jail sentence for killing a family in a car accident. Shortly after, he flees to Scotland with minimal contact with his family back in Australia. When he finally returns home, the brothers have a slightly awkward reunion, stirring up years of resentment, concern and sibling love.

The symbolism of water is addressed throughout the story, and as such, it is the theme of my mini-publication. Water is a central part of a fond family vacation memory, involving a clumsy journey to an island that results in a broken raft. Additionally, there is a sense of murkiness (missing details, indirect phrasing) in the flow of the story.
THE PACKAGE
The mini-publication is presented in a string-tie envelope, containing a coptic-stitch binded book and supplementary elements drawn from the story (a memorial sheet and a postcard).
THE BOOK
book cover design

The graphics on the cover are a result of experimental photography with water and printed text, with some digital manipulation on Photoshop.
The short story is supplemented with collage art, incorporating the haunting and tragic points of the story. Because the bulk of the story is about memories and past events, the collages were created to look dated and nostalgic. Lines of manipulated text weave through the collages, tying together the visual elements of the book.
THE SUPPORTING ELEMENTS
This postcard is an interpretation of a piece of correspondence from Fynn to Raf. In the story, it is mentioned that the only way Fynn reached out was through a couple of cards and a sorry Skype call. I picked out this moment because I wanted to highlight the slightly strained but still intact relationship between the brothers.
In the story, a road shoulder is decorated with trinkets and tributes to the family who died at that spot because of a car collision caused by Fynn. This sheet of paper was designed to look like it was retrieved from the site, with a weathered, crumpled texture. I included this the mini-publication package because the road shoulder memorial is a significant visual in the story.
