SenTree - smartphone calendar accessory (2012)

In this project we explored mobile phone symbiosis; the idea of creating an attachment that enhances the features of your phone. We created a device that gives visual reminders of upcoming deadlines based on the phone's calendar.

Having researched the brief and produced mind maps to understand the topic, the group identified a persona to design for. We also decided to design in a minimalist style that would be in keeping with HTC phones. Our reproduction of their logo and photos is purely for educational purposes.

As a group we brainstormed over 50 potential product areas of which the 3 best were selected. Numerous ideas were sketched within these and a pro-con analysis performed which favoured a tree shaped reminder or communication device.

Each member then developed the concept and one of mine (listed third) was chosen as our final concept to embody.

During embodiment design, we chose to focus purely on the calendar reminder feature and drop the communication aspect. The leaves are synchronised with the phone so they are initially clear and gradually glow brighter as the deadline approaches, flashing when it is imminent.

Using Solidworks, Photoview and Keyshot, I modelled and rendered the concept.

As a group we built a prototype using dense foam. I then assembled, sanded and painted the tree. I was surprised that the paint finish was very matte but on reflection this was a result of the porous foam.

I volunteered to produce mock packaging for the SenTree. This proved time consuming when trying to curve stiff mountboard but I was pleased with the result. If the product was developed further, the stems could become detachable therefore allowing a smaller, simpler box.
