The camera uses six fish-eye lenses to capture an immersive 360, 3D view. The camera is available in two formats, the Obsidian R which prioritizes resolution with 8K video at 30 fps, and the Obsidian S that puts the focus on frame rate, and can boast of 4K video at a speedy 120 fps frame rate. Both cameras have three different video modes, as well as the ability to record RAW still photos in the DNG format. Only a 3D 360° panorama video can give a true sense of immersion, a key to bringing the virtual reality world to its audience. Kandao Obsidian utilizes a deep-learning stitching method, automatically generating high quality stereoscopic panoramas.
The camera, named the Obsidian has garnered a "Best Of Innovation Honoree" award at CES 2017 in Las Vegas as well as a German design award winner in 2018 and was one of the cameras singled out for praise by Facebook's VR engineer director, Brian Cabral.
