Il soulève la boule en acier et la jette vers le bas. Sous l'effet de l'impact, la tôle commence à se plier.
Il jette la boule sur la feuille de métal, encore et encore, jusqu'à ce qu'une demi-sphère se forme.
C'est un travail dur, il est en sueur, mais c'est seulement le début.
Depuis vingt ans , Phil crée des "steel pans". Il est allé à Trinidad pour apprendre des meilleurs, car c'est là qu'est né cet instrument, et ils lui ont dit : " Tu dois le sentir".
Il a lutté, mais a persévéré et le métal a commencé à lui parler.
Le "Steel pan" est devenu sa vie et sa philosophie, jusqu'au jour où il a découvert le "handpan", un cousin proche du "Steel pan". Le "Handpan" est magique. Il a le pouvoir de mettre le monde extérieur en pause.
Lorsque le "Handpan" commence à chanter, tout devient calme et le temps semble s'arréter.
Pour que l'émerveillement se produise, l'accordage doit être précis et juste. Pas seulement de manière individuelle, mais chaque note doit aussi participer à un équilibre général de l'instrument. La vibration d'une note doit entrer en résonance avec d'autres, mais pas avec toutes.
Guider les ondes sonores le long du métal, tel est le secret de la fabrication. Un secret qui ne peut pas être enseigné et qui se mérite. Un long chemin intérieur, où le créateur doit en permanence s'adapter et ne peut se laisser guider que par son instinct et faire confiance à ses mains.
The pan maker
He lifts up the steel ball and smashes it down. Under the impact the metal sheet starts to bend. He forces the ball onto the metal again and again, until a half-sphere has been formed. It is hard work, he is sweating, but this is only the beginning.
For twenty years Phil has been creating steel drums. He went to Trinidad to learn from the best and they told him : « You have to feel it. »
He struggled but persevered. And the metal started talking to him. Steel drums became his life and his philosophy, until one day he discovered the handpan, a close cousin to the steel drum. The handpan is magic. It has the power to set the outside world on pause. When the handpan starts to sing, everything else goes quiet.
For the wonder to occur, every note needs to be just right, not just in pitch, but also in position. The vibration of one tone must enter into resonance with other notes for the sound to be hole. However, the tone should not set off all the notes on the pan, just a distinct few.
To guide the sound waves along the metal is the secret of pan making. It cannot be taught, it can only be earned. A long interiour journey, in which the maker has to adapt constantly and can only follow his instincts and trust his hands.
