How to Survive Fashion Week

How To Survive Fashion Week

With Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week kicking off in Sydney next month, fashionistas can look forward to another week of amazing outfits, new collections and inspiring runways.Whether you be in Sydney, Milan or New York, attending Fashion Week can be full of fun and excitement but it can sometimes be tiring and stressful. Here’s how you can make the most of Fashion Week and ensure you enjoy every second of it.

Be Committed To Getting Enough Sleep
Everything seems worse when you’re tired. You’re far more likely to feel grumpy and unmotivated if you haven’t gotten a good night’s sleep. So if you’re going to be attending a lot of shows, running from one runway to the next and then heading out to afterparties, make sure to give your body time to recharge. Part of the fun of fashion week is the social aspect of it, and while enjoying a drink or two is a definitely a way to celebrate the end of a long day, too much champagne does not put you in good stead for the next day. If you can, try and get eight hours a night and avoid drinking caffeine or exercising before bed. Not only will you look better for all those Instagram shots if you’re well-rested, but more importantly, you’ll feel better and full of energy to face the day.

Keep Everything Charged
Fashion week usually means being on your phone a lot. Whether it’s snapping videos of the runway for your social media, hunting down fashion inspiration online or searching the location of where you next need to be, your phone gets a workout. If you’re a budding photographer, your camera probably gets a workout too. There’s plenty of cool and crazy outfits to shoot at fashion week and you don’t want to miss out on getting that great shot. To avoid the social faux pas of not posting an outfit look or not being able to get an uber to your next location, make sure to keep all your devices charged and ready to go. Pack chargers, or even better portable chargers, in your handbag and a handy tip is to put your phone on aeroplane mode when you're not using it. One thing you should remember though is to put your phone down occasionally and enjoy your surroundings. While it’s great to get a cool photo of a venue for your Instagram story, there’s nothing like appreciating the moment for what it is.

Pack Comfortable Shoes
It’s a great idea to avoid heels completely during fashion week if you can. Fashion weeks, no matter where they are, mean long days, walking from show to show, sometimes standing to watch runways depending on the venue and this can take its toll on your poor feet especially if you’re wearing uncomfortable shoes. However, some fashionistas are committed to heels or need to wear a particular pair of shoes with a particular outfit. If this is the case, make sure to pack a pair of comfortable shoes, like some ballet flats, so you can change should you need to. Painful blisters do not make for a fun fashion week!

Rent, Don’t Buy
One of the stresses of fashion week can be finding a new, unique and interesting outfit to wear each day. Buying a whole new wardrobe for the sole purpose of fashion week isn’t really a financially smart move. So how can you get your hands on some new designer clothes without blowing your budget? The answer is to rent your outfit or outfits, rather than splurging on clothes you might not wear again. By using a dress rental service like The Volte, you can hire a designer piece for a few days then return it once the craziness of fashion week is over. Renting gives you a chance to try out some more out-there looks that you might otherwise shy away from and to wear brands that might usually be out of your budget!

Chat To People
Make the most of your time at fashion week! Introduce yourself to people, get to know the photographers and the people sitting or hanging around you. Fashion week is a great way to network, especially if you work in the industry but even if you don’t. You never know where a conversation might take you or when a quick chat with someone might turn into a new and exciting opportunity so be afraid to start chatting with someone.

Pack The Essentials
You don’t want to be lugging around what looks like an overnight bag around the streets of Sydney. Pack the essentials but try and make sure they fit into a handbag that’s not going to be a pain to carry around with you. You don’t need to bring your whole makeup collection or fifteen spare tops with you. Just make sure to bring your chargers, a comfy pair of slides if you’re in heels, a layer in case it gets chilly and some snacks! Keeping those blood sugar levels high is key.
