Chernobyl: the legacy of a disaster

The Chernobyl Exclusion Zone remains one of the most radioactively contaminated areas in the world following the nuclear disaster in 1986. The accident precipitated an abrupt evacuation, leaving behind an apocalyptic landscape. It is estimated that the area will be uninhabitable for 24,000 years until the radioactive materials that were released from reactor 4 have fully decayed. In the wake of that tragic Saturday, a zone of alienation was delineated around the nuclear power plant. This zone encompasses the city of Pripyat, which was once a vibrant community of 50,000 residents and now stands as a desolate ghost town.
